How to care for your shoes

Mens shoes and trainers need just as much TLC as women's shoes do. The better you look after them the longer they will last, and this is a long-term money saving strategy. The classic male shoe is the slip on or laced shoe made of leather. They tend to be black or brown and slightly shiny. So this is how they should stay. Therefore polishing is required and not just once in a blue moon either!

The basic method to polishing leather shoes is to remove any dirt and then polish with a wax or liquid shoe polish. To remove the unwanted dirt a small shoe brush is ideal. You gently brush across the curve of the shoe removing the clinging dirt. At this point you will immediately see a difference. Repeat this brushing around the whole shoe and then proceed to the polishing stage.

Get your wax or liquid polish and place a little on a dry rag or cloth. Put your spare hand inside the shoe and hold it vertically upwards, then take the cloth and rub it round in tiny circles round the shoe. Once the shoe has been completely covered then rub quite hard with a clean cloth, definitely using some elbow grease! You will then have a shoe you can see your face in.

Mens trainers on the other hand do not need this old-fashioned TLC, they need modern technology: a washing machine. Most trainers can withstand a light cycle in a washing machine and you will be amazed at how much dirt comes out of those shoes. But do remember to take out the laces before putting then in the machine.

Finally keep tabs on your laces and soles of your shoes and trainers. Laces can easily begin to fray and look tatty, so replace them. Laces are cheap and can make an old pair of shoes look brand new. Similarly a worn out sole can be uncomfortable and does not look good, so get them re-soled. This is a good investment, as it will extend the life of your shoes by at least a year.

Look after your shoes well and they will, in return, look after your feet.
